Arthur Marriott QC and Richard Jones QC, widely regarded as two of the leading figures in international arbitration and dispute resolution will be visiting the University of Leicester to provide a talk on International Commercial Arbitration on Monday 23rd January 2012. The talk will take place in Ken Edwards Building, Lecture Theatre 3 from 12 – 1 p.m.The talk is an ideal opportunity for those studying International Law to hear more about the commercial and business aspects of International Law. For First Year Law students this talk should assist you in deciding whether you would be interested in choosing International Law as one of your elective modules in the next academic year. The talk will also be of assistance to Final Year students who are considering pursuing a Masters in International Commercial Law.

It is recommended that those interested in participating in the ELSA – International Commercial Arbitration Moot attend this event.

Furthermore, this event is an ideal networking opportunity for those that are interested in pursuing a career at the Bar.

The talk is open to all, however, members of ELSA will also receive extra credits for attending this event.

It will also be possible for non-members to sign-up and receive extra credits for attending this event.

WHAT: Open Panel Discussion: The Arab Spring:
The Leicester University United Nations Society is proud to present Dr. Adrian Gallagher (Politics and International Relations Department) and Dr. Rabah Aissaoui (Modern Languages Department) and their thoughts on the origins of the Arab Spring. The first will be addressing ‘The Intervention in Iraq: A Part of the Arab Spring Process’ while the latter will be focusing on ‘Algeria and the Arab Spring in North Africa’. There will a chance to ask each speaker questions afterwards and we expect a lively debate on how the Arab Spring erupted and what the consequences for the region and the world as a whole will be.

WHAT: ELSA European Legal System Lecture Series: France and Italy: Join us to find out about the legal system, legal education and legal profession in civil law countries. Dr. Veronique Voruz will be discussing the essential aspects of the Civil Law Legal Systems with particular references to France and Paolo Vargiu will be discussing the legal professions and legal education.

“The Constitutional Role of the Law Officers: Lecture by the Solicitor General”

Info

Edward Garnier QC, MP became Solicitor General following the 2010 general election having previously held the position in the shadow cabinet.

He gained Undergraduate and Masters degrees in modern history from Jesus College Oxford before studying Law at the College of Law in London. After being called to the bar he became a QC in 1995 and amongst other jobs has worked as a lawyer for The Guardian newspaper. He is an active local MP for the Harborough constituency.

When and Where

Thursday 10th November - 18:30 Lecture Theatre 1, Ken Edwards Building

There is also going to be a tea and coffee reception in the Harry Peach library between about 5-5.30pm
